This animal shelter with administrative offices, a veterinary clinic, and kennels uses recycled materials and energy-efficient systems, saving over $22,000 a year in energy-related costs.

Among the facility’s sustainability measures:
- High-efficiency mechanical system with variable-air-volume controls in each room
- Energy recovery system reclaims both sensible and latent energy from exhaust air
- 100-ton gas-fired absorption chiller
- Radiant floor heating
- Daylighting: ridge skylights and perimeter windows supply 40–90% of the building’s light
- Occupancy sensors
- Building and parking clustered to preserve wetland area for wildlife refuge
